FRATE FRANCESCO. - A journal of Franciscan culture, founded at Assisi in 1924 as the official organ of the Religious Committee for the celebrations in honour of s. Francesco d'Assisi on the seventh centenary of his death. Its first literary director was Prof. Giovanni Joergensen, assisted by the editor Fr. Vittorino Facchinetti O.F.M. and by Canon Sigismondo Spagnoli in artistic direction.
From this journal, in which learned investigations and pages of varied literature alternated, came the appeals to the artists of Italy for competitions in painting and sculpture, for the commemorative centenary postage stamp, and for literary contests. In 1927 the directorship was assumed by Arnaldo Fortini, mayor of Assisi; in 1928 the journal was transferred to Milan, to the Circolo di cultura francescana, established by Fr. Facchinetti, who retained its direction until 1936. The following year the periodical moved to Rome, to the Cattedra francescana (Via Merulana 124), under the direction of Fr. L. di Stolfi O.F.M.
