MARCO Y CATALAN, Juan-Francisco. — Cardinal, b. at Bello (Saragozza), 24 Oct. 1771, d. at Rome 15 March 1841. Appointed archpriest of the Chapter of Saragozza (1814), he was summoned to Rome in 1816 as Auditor of the Rota for Spain.
In 1826 Leo XII named him Governor of Rome. Created cardinal deacon by the same Pontiff in the Consistory of 15 Dec. 1828, his name became widely known during the Conclave of 1831 when, as the election of Cardinal Giacomo Giustiniani to the papacy was thought imminent, he pronounced, on behalf of the King of Spain, the exclusionary formula against the prelate.
M.’s Decisiones totales, issued in Rome (1829) covering the years 1817 to 1828, were published in two large volumes through the care of the advocate Nicola Salvadori.
