MARTINIANA, CARLO GIUSEPPE FILIPPO della. - Born in Turin on June 19, 1724, died in Vercelli on Dec. 7, 1802. Having become a priest, he was spiritual director at the University of Turin; in 1757 he became bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. Pius VI created him cardinal in the Consistory of June 1, 1778, and in the following year appointed him archbishop of Vercelli.
He later met with Pius VI when, on the journey of deportation to France, on Apr. 23, 1799, the Pope stopped at Crescentino near Vercelli, and he was the last cardinal to meet with that Pontiff. On May 20, 1800, having just returned from the Conclave of Venice, he had the historic meeting in which Napoleon, First Consul, expressed his intention of regulating relations with the Church, a prelude to the Concordat. Pius VII hastened to second this good disposition by entrusting to M. the first contacts, which very soon became official negotiations entrusted to experienced diplomats.
