GIUSTINIANI, GIACOMO. - Cardinal, born on 29 Dec. 1769 in Rome, died there on 24 Feb. 1843. He served as Vice-Legate of Ravenna in 1794, Governor of Perugia in 1797, and President of the State Junta in Rome, retiring to Naples after the occupation of Rome by General Berthier.
Upon the return of Pius VII in 1814, G. was appointed Pro-Vicar of Rome. He became Titular Archbishop of Tyre in 1817 and Nuncio to Spain, remaining there until 1826. Created cardinal on 2 Oct. 1826 by Leo XII, he served as Bishop of Imola until 1832. In the 1830 conclave, he was among the papabili, but his elevation to the tiara was blocked by the veto imposed by the government of Madrid.
