GIUSTINIANI, ORAZIO. - Oratorian cardinal, Genoese patrician, b. on the Island of Chios, 28 Feb. 1580, d. in Rome, 25 July 1649. Having gone to Rome, at the age of twenty-five he entered the Congregation of the Oratory, where he distinguished himself by the exemplary character of his life and his gifts as an orator.
He concerned himself with the cause for the canonization of s. Filippo Neri and erected in his honour the first church at Carbognano (Lazio). He was placed in charge of the monastery of Farfa and, in 1632, was appointed keeper of the Vatican Library. He published the Storia del Concilio fiorentino, edited by J. Hardouin, in Acta Concilium IX, Paris 1715, p. 669 ff. Consultor of the Holy Office, in 1640 he was elected bishop of Montalto, where he worked very successfully. Transferred in 1645 to Nocera, he founded there a Congregation of the Oratory and attended to the liturgical instruction of the clergy. In the same year the Pope created him cardinal and in 1646 librarian of the Holy Roman Church. Having resigned the bishopric, he devoted himself to the protectorate of the monks of s. Basilio, presiding over their Chapter at Grottaferrata in '49.
