MICHAEL OF CHERNIGOV, Saint. - A Russian prince of the Rurikid family, he was successively prince of Novgorod, of Halych in Galicia, and of Kiev. He thus lived on the margins of Central European culture, but not so far from it as not to know it, and indeed as to be partly subject to its influence during some period of his life. When his native city of Chernigov was occupied by the Tatars (1241) and largely destroyed, M. was forced in 1245 to go to Sarai, the capital of Batu, leader of the Tatars of the lower Volga.
