MICHAEL THE BRAVE. - Mihai Viteazu, b. in 1558, d. in 1608, prince of Wallachia, is one of the most turbulent Romanian figures. Having ascended the throne in 1593, he immediately drew close to the Crusade devised by Clement VIII and led by the Emperor Rudolf, and began the war on his own, inflicting on the Turks, in 1595, the terrible defeat of Calugareni. When his ally, Prince Sigismund Bathory, ceded Transylvania to Card. Andrew Bathory, his cousin and a trusted man of the Poles allied with the Turks, M., no longer feeling safe, entered Transylvania and, in the battle of Selimber (1599), defeated Andrew, who there lost both his realm and his life. In this new possession of his M. founded for the Romanians the "Orthodox" bishopric of Alba Iulia; in his Transylvanian council there was also a Magyar Catholic bishop.
With the conquest, in the following year, also of Moldavia, M. brought about the unity (cfiniera) of the Romanian lands; but after various victories and defeats he was treacherously killed near Turda. With him ended the great resistance of the Romanians to the Turks, who had already been masters of Hungary since 1526.
