BÁTHORY, Sigismondo, Prince of Transylvania. - B. in Prague in 1572, d. there in 1613. Raised to the principality at a very young age (1581), he took over its government alone at the age of sixteen. Contrary to the traditional policy of his country, he rose up against the Turks, aligning himself, on the advice of the Jesuit Alfonso Carrillo, alongside Emperor Rudolf II. Victorious in Wallachia (1595) and financially supported by Clement VIII, he suffered a harsh defeat the following year at Mezőkeresztes, in the aftermath of which he abdicated (10 Apr. 1598) in favor of the emperor, asking in exchange for 100,000 florins and the duchy of Oppeln. Repentant, he returned to Transylvania the following August to resume governing. He abdicated a second time in 1599; but reelected in 1601, he shortly thereafter ceded power once again and definitively to the emperor.
