Letter of Appointment

LETTER OF APPOINTMENT. - According to the language of the Curia, this term means that brief missive, written in the name of the Pope, by which a particular person is customarily notified of an appointment or a promotion to some dignity, office, employment, rank, benefice, etc. In the majority of cases it constitutes a swift means of communication, while awaiting in the meantime the dispatch and delivery of the bull or brief relating to that appointment or promotion. New cardinals, for example, receive a letter by which the Cardinal Secretary of State announces to them their elevation to the cardinalatial dignity in the secret consistory.
