BIGLIA, MELCHIORRE. - Apostolic nuncio, b. in Milan, d. in Prague in Apr. 1571. Of an ancient and noble family, he was a friend of Cardinal Gian Angelo de' Medici, later pope under the name Pius IV, and an intimate of St. Charles Borromeo. After having been for some time with Cristoforo Madruzzo, cardinal of Trent, he came to Rome in 1562 and was appointed apostolic protonotary. On 31 Aug. 1565 he was sent, in place of Zaccaria Delfino, who had been created cardinal, as legate in Germany with the particular mission of delivering to the emperor the subsidies necessary for the war against the Turks in Hungary.
Having left Rome on 21 Sept., he showed in this legation very great zeal, compromising himself however with the emperor by promises beyond the intentions of the Holy See. Nevertheless, although he wished to return to his homeland and had made a request to Rome for this at the death of Pius IV, he was confirmed in his legation by Pius V, on 20 Apr. 1566, especially because of the warm recommendations of Commendone, cardinal and extraordinary legate in Germany, who set great store by his collaboration. In this same year he took part, with the same Commendone, in the diet of Augsburg, where he succeeded in obtaining various concessions in favor of the Catholics from the emperor. His copious correspondence with the Holy See is preserved at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
