MADRUZZO, CRISTOFORO. - Cardinal and prince-bishop of Trent, b. at Castel Nano in Val di Non on July 5, 1512, d. at Tivoli on July 5, 1578. A descendant of a noble Trentine family, he had a brilliant and rapid career: bishop of Trent (1529), administrator of Bressanone (1542) and cardinal.
In 1556 he was appointed by Philip II governor of Milan, and in 1561 by Pius IV legate of the Marches. His principal merit was, as prince-bishop of Trent, to have overcome all difficulties and provided for the many needs of victualling and public safety, necessary for the happy and tranquil conduct of the Council. Because of his family and personal position, he longed to be a mediator between Papacy and Empire, Latin and Germanic world, Protestant revolution and Catholic Reform, but he obtained few results through lack of political skill and prudence. Sincerely pious, he was not always understood by many Italian prelates. A friend of cardinals Gonzaga, Sadoleto, Morone and Pole, his Catholic sentiments cannot be doubted. However, the lack of solid theological preparation led him to protect and defend heterodox innovators and reformers such as Carnesecchi and Vergerio, and at the Council, because of his attitudes on the questions of justification and the translation of the Bible, he was unjustly suspected of being the head of the German party, that is, the Lutheran one. Living between the Renaissance current and the Catholic Reform, M. was a typical representative of that period of transition.
