MADRUZZO, LODOVICO. - Cardinal and prince-bishop of Trento, born in Trento in 1532, died in Rome on 2 Apr. 1600.
Nephew of Card. Cristoforo M., he succeeded him in the episcopal see of Trento (1567), having already been a cardinal since 26 Feb. 1561. He took part in the Council of Trent, where he was among the promoters of the granting of the chalice to the Bohemians and of the obligation of bishops’ residence. A skilled diplomat, he acted as mediator with the Emperor for the pacification of the Netherlands (1578), was appointed papal legate to the imperial court (1581), and took part in the Diet of Augsburg (1582). Of pro-Spanish leanings, in the five conclaves in which he took part he repeatedly exercised the right of exclusion in Spain’s favour.
