MADRUZZO, LUDOVICO. - Cardinal and prince-bishop of Trent, b. in Trent in 1532, d. in Rome on 2 April 1600.
Nephew of Cardinal Cristoforo M., he succeeded him in the episcopal see of Trent (1567), having already been a cardinal since 26 February 1561. He took part in the Council of Trent, at which he was among the promoters of the concession of the chalice to the Bohemians and of the obligation of residence for bishops. A skilled diplomat, he acted as a mediator with the Emperor for the pacification of the Netherlands (1578), was appointed pontifical legate to the imperial court (1581) and took part in the Diet of Augsburg (1582). Of pro-Spanish leanings, in the five conclaves in which he took part he several times exercised the right of exclusion in favor of Spain.
