MADRUZZO, Lodovico. — Cardinal and prince-bishop of Trent, b. at Trent in 1532, d. at Rome on 2 Apr. 1600.
Nephew of Cardinal Cristoforo M., he succeeded him in the episcopal see of Trent (1567), having already been made a cardinal on 26 Feb. 1561. He took part in the Council of Trent, in which he was among the promoters of the concession of the chalice to the Bohemians and of the obligation of episcopal residence. A skilled diplomat, he worked at the imperial court for the pacification of the Netherlands (1578), was named pontifical legate to the imperial court (1581), and took part in the Diet of Augsburg (1582). Of pro-Spanish leanings, in the five conclaves in which he participated he exercised the right of exclusion several times in favor of Spain.
