BIGONI, ANGELO. - Theologian, preacher and prolific ascetical writer, of the Conventual Friars Minor, b. at Corfu on 17 Feb. 1779, d. at Padua, in repute of sanctity, on 3 March 1860. A religious (1796) most distinguished for virtue and learning, he was provincial minister of the Paduan province of St. Anthony in 1835, and four years later minister general (99th) of his whole Order (1839-45), which he raised up again with great skill and devotion from the grave trials it had suffered under the Napoleonic suppressions.

He published esteemed works of theology, spirituality, philosophy, politics and history. Especially worthy of mention, besides the course of scriptural meditations on the Mystical Kingdom of Jesus Christ (11 vols., Padua 1822) and the profound theological work De Christo Reparatore (Würzburg 1846), are the Elevations of the soul to God at the various hours of the day (21st ed., Bologna 1863) and the valuable Course of meditations for every day of the year for the use of religious and secular priests (4 vols., 4th ed., Milan 1927).
