FERRETTI, Gabriele, Blessed. - Observant Friar Minor, b. in Ancona ca. 1385, d. there on 12 Nov. 1456. A descendant of a noble Ancona family, he entered the Order early, distinguishing himself by virtue and austerity. He was guardian in Ancona and provincial minister of the Marches. At his death, St. James of the March delivered the funeral oration. Many prodigies, worked in life and after death, are attributed to him. His cult ab immemorabili was approved by Benedict XIV.

FERRETTI, GABRIELE. - Cardinal, born in Ancona on 31 January 1795, died in Rome on 31 September 1860. In 1827 he was appointed bishop of Rieti, where, in 1831, he directed the resistance against the revolutionary troops of General Sarcognani. In 1833 he was sent as apostolic nuncio to Naples, where he carried out relief work for cholera victims during the epidemic of 1837. In the same year he became archbishop of Fermo and in 1838 cardinal. He made no small number of enemies for himself because of the severe reforms he wished to introduce in his diocese.
In 1847 he was appointed Secretary of State by Pius IX. Following the Pope's policy, he favored — often in conflict with the conservatives — the neo-Guelphs and the moderate liberals, and he recalled Mamiani from exile. Once his popularity had collapsed because of the firm measures decreed in January 1848, he obtained his release from the office and received the legation of Ravenna. After the flight of Pius IX from Rome, he went to Naples and then to Malta. He returned to Rome with the restoration and became major penitentiary in 1852 and the following year bishop of Sabina.
