FERUS, GIOVANNI (WILD). - Observant Franciscan, famous preacher, b. June 24, 1495 in Swabia, d. 1554 in Mainz. He became a religious in 1515; having completed his course of studies he was sent as a preacher to Mainz (1528), where he remained until his death, much esteemed for his elegant and effective eloquence and for his firmness, free of acrimony, especially in the defense of the Faith against the encroaching Protestant danger.
His numerous sermons were mostly published after his death, contrary to his intention. Lacking polish and precision in some points, also on account of adulterations by Lutheran editors who are said to have overseen their printing, as some insinuate, all his works were condemned and placed on the Index, «donec corrigantur», except for the Commentaries on the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. John with his 1st epistle, and the book Examen ordinandorum, revised and printed after 1577.
