then law studies at Leipzig and Heidelberg, but subsequently, in 1830, he devoted himself exclusively to music in Leipzig. In 1834 he founded the journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, in whose pages the entire polemical and critical fervor of his spirit would live on. In 1847 he became director of the Liedertafel; in 1848 he organized the Dresden Choral Society (Gesangverein); in 1850 he was appointed musical director in Düsseldorf. Besides numerous compositions for orchestra, chamber music, and piano, he wrote a Mass (op. 147) for four-voice choir and orchestra (1852) and a Requiem (op. 148) for choir and orchestra (1852).
