SCHUMANN, ROBERT. - Musician, b. at Zwickau on 8 June 1810, d. at Endenich on 29 July 1856.

Initiated in his youth into musical studies, he added to them then jurisprudence at Leipzig and Heidelberg, but subsequently, in 1830, he devoted himself exclusively to music in Leipzig. In 1834 he founded the journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, in whose pages the whole polemical and critical ardor of his spirit would live. In 1847 he became director of the Liedertafel, in 1848 he organized the choral society of Dresden (Gesangverein), in 1850 he was appointed musical director at Düsseldorf. Besides the numerous compositions for orchestra, chamber and piano, he wrote a mass (op. 147) for 4-part choir and orchestra (1852) and a Requiem (op. 148) for choir and orchestra (1852).
