SCHUBERT, FRANZ. - Musician, b. Jan. 31, 1797 in Vienna, d. there Nov. 19, 1828.

After his first studies with his father, with his brother and with M. Holze, choirmaster of his parish church, he was admitted to the Imperial Chapel and to the boarding school where he was first violinist.

By 1811 he had already composed various music, among which a Mass in C major and a Kyrie. At 16 he left the boarding school and became a student, while continuing to compose, among other things, the Mass in G major and the Mass in F, which, sung on Oct. 16, 1814 on the occasion of the 1st centenary of the parish of Lichtental, met with great success.

After the vast production of the Lieder, again sacred music: Psalm 23 (which met with lively success at the « Musikverein ») and the Missa solemnis, composed between 1820 and 1822. The complete and chronological list of his sacred works includes: Antiphons, op. 113 (1820); Auguste im coelestium, duet for soprano and tenor (1816); Grable, op. 150 (1815); 3 Kyrie (1812-13); Magnificat (1816); 6 Masses (1814-28); 5 Offertories (1816-28); 4 Salve Regina (1814-24); 2 Stabat Mater (1815-16); 5 Tantum ergo (1816-28); Deutsche Messe (1827).
