SCHRÖDER, ALFRED. — Ecclesiastical historian, b. 4 Feb 1865 at Passau, d. 16 Mar 1935 at Dillingen.
Ordained priest in 1887 and having obtained the degree in theology at Munich in 1890, he was appointed in 1891 archivist and librarian at the episcopal see of Augsburg, then cathedral vicar, and in 1898 professor of history and art history at the Higher School of Dillingen. After having dealt with the genesis and development of the archdeaconry (Entwicklung des Archidiakonats bis zum II. Jahrhundert, 1890), a subject to which he returned in later years (Das Archidiakonat im Bistum Augsburg, 1921), he continued the work of Stichele on the diocese of Augsburg (Das Bistum Augsburg, historisch und statistisch beschrieben, V–IX, 1895–1934). From 1909 to 1929 he also promoted the publication of the Arch. für die Gesch. des Hochstifts Augsburg, of which six volumes appeared.
