SCHRÖDER, ALFRED. - Church historian, b. 4 Feb. 1865 at Passau, d. 16 March 1935 at Dillingen.

Ordained priest in 1887 and having obtained his doctorate in theology at Munich in 1890, he was appointed in 1891 archivist and librarian at the bishopric of Augsburg, then cathedral vicar, and in 1898 professor of history and art history at the Higher School of Dillingen. After having dealt with the genesis and development of the archdeaconate (Entwicklung des Archidiakonats bis zum 11. Jahrhundert, 1890), a subject to which he returned also in later years (Das Archidiakonat im Bistum Augsburg, 1921), he continued Steichele's work on the diocese of Augsburg (Das Bistum Augsburg, historisch und statistisch beschrieben, V-IX, 1895-1934). From 1909 to 1929 he also promoted the publication of the Arch. für die Gesch. des Hochstifts Augsburg, of which 6 vols. appeared.
