SCHRÖDER, ALFRED. - Ecclesiastical historian, born 4 Feb. 1865 at Passavia, died 16 March 1935 at Dillingen.
Ordained priest in 1887 and having obtained his degree in theology at Monaco in 1890, he was appointed in 1891 archivist and librarian at the bishopric of Augusta, then cathedral vicar, and in 1898 professor of history and art history at the Higher School of Dillingen. After studying the origin and development of the archdeaconry (Entwicklung des Archidiakonats bis zum 11. Jahrhundert, 1890), a subject to which he returned even in later life (Das Archidiakonat im Bistum Augsburg, 1921), he continued Steichele’s work on the diocese of Augusta (Das Bistum Augsburg, historisch und statistisch beschrieben, V-IX, 1895-1934). From 1909 to 1929 he also promoted the publication of the Arch. für die Gesch. des Hochstifts Augsburg, of which 6 volumes appeared.
