SCHWARTZ, EDUARD. – Protestant, scholar of ecclesiastical history and philologist, born in Kiel on 22 August 1858, died in Munich on 13 February 1940. He was professor of classical philology at the Universities of Rostock, Giessen, Strasbourg, Göttingen, and Munich.
His scholarly output, which was very extensive, includes studies on Greek historiography, chronology, and ancient geography, as well as on the history of literature. In his later years he devoted himself to ancient Church history, and he gained particular importance through his initiative in the critical edition of the acts of the ecumenical councils, which, though left unfinished, includes only the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon (*Acta conciliorum oecumenicorum*, Berlin 1914–40). He also prepared the critical edition of Eusebius’s *Ecclesiastical History* in the Berlin corpus (*Leipzig* 1903–1909) and wrote a small volume on Constantine and the Church (*Kaiser Konstantin und die christliche Kirche*, Leipzig 1913).
