SCHWARTZ, EDUARD. - Protestant, scholar of ecclesiastical history and philologist, b. in Kiel on 22 Aug. 1858, d. in Munich on 13 Feb. 1940. He was professor of classical philology at the Universities of Rostock, Giessen, Strasbourg, Göttingen and Munich.
His scholarly output, very extensive, includes studies on Greek historiography, on chronology and ancient geography, as well as on the history of literature. In his last years he devoted himself to ancient Church history, and he acquired particular importance through the initiative for the critical edition of the acts of the ecumenical Councils, which, left unfinished, comprises only the Councils of Ephesus and of Chalcedon (Acta conciliorum oecumeniorum, Berlin 1914-40). He also produced the critical edition of Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History in the corpus Berchtes (Leipzig 1903-1909) and wrote a small volume on Constantine and the Church (Kaiser Konstantin und die christliche Kirche, Leipzig 1913).
