SCHWARTZ, EDUARD. - Protestant, scholar of ecclesiastical history and philologist, b. at Kiel on 22 Aug. 1858, d. at Munich in Bavaria on 13 Feb. 1940. He was professor of classical philology at the Universities of Rostock, Giessen, Strasbourg, Göttingen, and Munich.
His very extensive scholarly output includes studies on Greek historiography, chronology and ancient geography, as well as on the history of literature. In his later years he devoted himself to the ancient history of the Church, and he gained particular distinction through the initiative of the critical edition of the acts of the Ecumenical Councils which, left unfinished, includes only the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon (Acta conciliorum oecumeniorum, Berlin 1914-40). He also prepared the critical edition of Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History in the corpus Berchtes (Leipzig 1903-1909) and wrote a small volume on Constantine and the Church (Kaiser Konstantin und die christliche Kirche, Leipzig 1913).
