UBON, VICARIATO APOSTOLICO DI

UBON, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - By decree of 7 May 1953, the apostolic vicariate of Tharé (v.) in Thailand was divided for the erection of two independent ecclesiastical circumscriptions, namely the apostolic vicariate of U. and the apostolic prefecture of Udonthani (v.).

It was thus named after the city of residence of the Ordinary, which is a convenient center, being the fourth city of Thailand, and has a flourishing Christian community. It is made up of eight civil departments: Mahasarakham, Roiet, Surin, Sisaket, U., Kaiyaphum, Buriram, Khorat, whose total area is 87,000 sq. km., with a population of 4,020,058 inhabitants. The number of Catholics is about 10,905. The new vicariate was entrusted to the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris, while the remaining vicariate of Tharé was transferred to the secular clergy of Siam.
