Letter CDXXIV. To a certain judge.
He recommends to him the cause of the Abbey of Fontenay. 2 1 In the text is simplex, but we should probably read supplex.
2 Fontenay was a distinguished monastery in the Diocese of Autun, not far from Montbar, and founded by the relations of S. Bernard about A. D. iii. It was the second daughter-house of Clairvaux, and its first Abbot was Godfrey.
Letter CDXXV.
I have up to the present so confided in you, as to suppose it not necessary for me to be, wheresoever I knew you were, in respect of matters which affected our interests. I wonder therefore that you have been so inactive about the Abbey of Fontenay, which I left under your guardianship, and frequently begged you to be watchful over it. I hear that in suits on behalf of the same abbey which you have accepted for your determination, you have not yet come to a conclusion. Let me know how long you will delay to do this: how long you will neglect to visit and encourage those brethren, as you are accustomed to do; I shall not cease to complain on their behalf.
