Letters431 Letter CDXXXI. To the Lord Pope.
Letter CDXXXI. To the Lord Pope.
In favour of the Bishop of Troyes.
I entreat you in your justice, to give a favourable hearing to the Bishop of Troyes; and my great desire is that by the good offices of your Blessedness, such a concordat should be arrived at between him and his clergy, that the latter should cease any longer unfairly to LETTER CDXXXII.
vex a man who is old, and of whom they have no well-founded complaints to make. There is one among them not worth consideration, on account of his youth, but troublesome on account of his insolence, whose presumption ought, I consider, to be chastised, nor he be allowed to tread his Bishop under his feet: the bearer of this letter will inform you who he is. Let your judgment deign then to make fair decision respecting him and the others, so that the Bishop, who is a lover of your honour, may himself be honoured, and no one be oppressed by lack of justice. It is not to be borne with that the hatred of anyone should be allowed to injure a man who is defended by his innocence.
