Cum hominum mentes
On the Order of Pius (Pian Order of Knighthood)
POPE PIUS IX. FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MATTER.
1 Since the minds and spirits of men are so constituted that they are powerfully incited to tread the path of virtue and justice, and to cultivate the finest arts and to accomplish the most beautiful deeds, by the glory of honors and praises, Our Predecessors, the Roman Pontiffs, with prudent counsel indeed instituted Equestrian Orders, by which they might bestow upon Men well deserving of the Christian and civil commonwealth on account of outstanding deeds the honors due to them, and inflame others by such a stimulus to imitate illustrious examples of virtue. With this intention indeed, through similar Apostolic Letters of Ours issued on 17 June in the year 1847, We established an Equestrian Order called by Our name the Pian Order, and We divided it into two grades, of which one We attributed to Knights of the first class, the other truly to Knights of the second class, and likewise We granted that Knights of the first class only should possess the privilege of transmitting to their sons the title of nobility. In the same Letters We established a proper insignia of the same Order, which, made of gold, has the appearance of a star divided into eight blue rays, bearing a small white medal in the middle, in which is written in golden letters "PIUS IX", which medal is enclosed by a golden circle, and in it is inscribed in blue letters "VIRTUTI ET MERITO", and on the reverse side of the medal is written "ANNO MDCCCXLVII". We also established that Knights of the first class should wear that insignia hanging from a blue silk ribbon, distinguished by a double red line at the extreme edges, inserted at the neck, and that Knights of the second class should wear the same insignia of smaller size, and hanging from the same ribbon on the left side of the garment according to the common custom of knights. We have also made manifest the proper insignia of the Order, which is adorned with blue color, red edges, and various golden ornaments, for the various Knights themselves. Then We made known to the Knights of the first class that they should afterwards possess the privilege of wearing a large silver medal on the left side of the chest.

4 and We decree that all those who in the future are appointed should possess the privilege of wearing the aforementioned large silver medal on the left side of the chest, and that they should wear the other proper insignia of the Order already attributed to Knights of the first class no longer hanging from a ribbon inserted at the neck as before, but in such a way that the same insignia is sustained by a very long silk ribbon likewise blue from the right shoulder. And since many most illustrious Men have been co-opted by Us into the first class of the Pian Order with the privilege of wearing the aforementioned large silver medal, therefore by the present Letters We declare that those to whom the use of the same medal was granted by Us may and should wear the other insignia of the Order, just as is now prescribed by these Letters of Ours. Moreover, Knights of the first class of the Pian Order may in the future wear the aforementioned large silver medal also adorned with gleaming gems, as far as it shall be permitted to adorn the large medal with gems. These things We establish, grant, and declare, notwithstanding anything whatsoever to the contrary, especially the aforementioned Apostolic Letters issued on 17 June in the year 1847, which in all things that are in no way contrary to these present Letters We wish to remain firm and to remain in their force, and We command.

PIO PP. IX.
