LETTERE
CON CUI PIO PP. X LODA L'OPEROSITÀ SOLLECITISSIMA DEL MONASTERO DI SOLESMES NEL RESTAURARE L'ANTICA DISCIPLINA DEI CANTI GREGORIANI*
AL DILETTO FIGLIO PAOLO DELATTE, O. S. B. SUPERIORE DELLA CONGREGAZIONE GALLICANA, ABATE DI SOLESMES
Diletto figlio, salute e benedizione apostolica.

LITTERAE
QUIBUS PIUS PP. X LAUDAT SOLERTISSIMAM OPERAM COENOBII SOLESMENSIS IN VETERI DISCIPLINA GREGORIANORUM CONCENTUUM REDINTEGRANDA*
DILECTO FILIO PAULO DELATTE, O. S. B. CONGREGATIONIS GALLICAE ANTISTITI, ABBATI SOLESMENSI
Dilecte filii, salutem et Apostolicam benedictionem.
1 Ex quo tempore praeclarae vir memoriae Prosper Guéranger, primus decessor tuus, quum sese ad sacrae liturgiae scientiam totum contulisset, vestra studio suo excitavit inflammavitque studia, nobilitatum nemo ignorat coenobii Solesmensis nomen maxime ob datam solertissime operam redintegrandae in gregorianis concentibus veteri disciplinae.
Novimus quantopere Apostolicam Sedem Ecclesiamque diligas, divini cultus decori stüdeas, sanctae monasticae vitae instituta custodias.
Quorum auspicem itemque benevolentiae Nostrae singularis testem tibi, dilecte fili, tuisque sodalibus Apostolicam benedictionem amantissime in Domino impertimus.

PIUS PP. X
LETTERS
BY WHICH PIUS PP. X PRAISES THE MOST DILIGENT WORK OF THE MONASTERY OF SOLESMES IN RESTORING THE ANCIENT DISCIPLINE OF GREGORIAN CHANT*
TO OUR BELOVED SON PAUL DELATTE, O. S. B., SUPERIOR OF THE FRENCH CONGREGATION, ABBOT OF SOLESMES
Beloved son, greetings and Apostolic blessing.
1 From the time when that illustrious man of blessed memory, Prosper Guéranger, your first predecessor, having devoted himself entirely to the science of sacred liturgy, stirred up and inflamed your community with his zeal, no one is ignorant how greatly the name of the monastery of Solesmes has been ennobled, especially on account of the most diligent work given to restoring the ancient discipline in Gregorian chant. That such an undertaking, laborious and fruitful alike, was not lacking in testimonies of praise from the Apostolic See, urged on by you, nor indeed could it be; for Leo XIII of happy memory approved it more than once by name in letters written to you in the year nineteen hundred and one; and most recently in the month of February, the Sacred Council presiding over the Rites both ratified and gladly acknowledged the ritual books on chant edited by your care, now widely received in use. We, however, who have deemed it to be a matter of Our office to undertake this work from authority, that is, to restore the Gregorian modes to the discipline handed down of old, have often professed elsewhere and most recently shown that We regard your labors in this kind as of great importance.
2 For in the solemn ceremonies by which We celebrated the centennial of the death of the great Gregory, when We wished to consecrate, as it were, the beginnings of the restoration of Gregorian chant, We ordered that the very chants of Solesmes be employed as an example. Now, however, We have a particular reason why, beyond such great diligence in you, We should praise your most devoted spirit toward the Roman Pontiff. For when We were considering decreeing a Vatican edition of liturgical chants, which, adorned with Our auspices, would be used everywhere, and calling upon your diligence in this purpose, most welcome letters were brought to Us by you, beloved son, in the month of March, which not only announced that you were ready and prepared to labor in the matter which We desired, but also, for the sake of that same matter, that you were most willing to grant Us the fruits of your vigilance already widely known. It is easy indeed to understand how much it cost you to offer such a specimen of love and obedience, and how grateful it has been to Us on that account.
3 Therefore, in order that We might return worthy gratitude for so singular a benefit, when We subsequently entrusted the authentic edition, as it is called, to chosen men by Motu proprio, at the same time We wished that the Congregation over which you preside, and especially the family of Solesmes, should have these duties: to explore the entire harvest of ancient monuments existing on this matter according to their custom and practice, and from this to furnish the material elaborated and arranged for this edition to those whom We have designated for approval. Concerning this mandate and office entrusted to you, laborious indeed but most honorable, although you had already received it, We Ourselves gladly make you, beloved son, more certain of it, to whom the chief care pertains that your associates execute it. We know how greatly you love the Apostolic See and the Church, how you are devoted to the honor of divine worship, how you preserve the institutions of holy monastic life. The exercise of these virtues, as it has given you hitherto, so shall it give hereafter a happy outcome to the labors of the learned; since it is not unfittingly applied to you, the disciples, what Gregory proclaimed of the father and lawgiver: he could teach in no other way than he lived.
4 Moreover, We are confident that for you, to whom the work to be completed is entrusted, abundant aids of study shall be at hand, and especially that nothing shall hinder those seeking ancient manuscripts: We are certain that what is chief shall not be lacking, the divine assistance which We earnestly beseech. As a pledge of which and as a witness of Our singular benevolence toward you, beloved son, and your associates, We most lovingly impart the Apostolic blessing in the Lord.
5 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on 22 May, the feast of Pentecost, in the year nineteen hundred and four, in the first year of Our Pontificate.
