AGIORETIC, TOME. - One of the best-known documents of Palamism (v.), of an official character, composed on Mount Athos around 1339-40. Gregory Palamas wished to safeguard the doctrinal novelties of his Triads against any accusation by making of them a synthesis authorized as a matter of the whole of Athos, while himself remaining behind the scenes. And he succeeded. The drafting of the document, though inspired by Palamas, was carried out, according to the testimony of the author himself (Encomium of Palamas: PG 151, 393), by the disciple Philotheos Kokkinos, later patriarch of Constantinople. As many as 21 persons affixed their signatures. The official approval of the Byzantine Church was granted to the document at the celebrated Synod of 1351 (PG 151, 757-58). From then on the t. a. was one of the milestones in the history of Palamism.
