AGIORITICO, TOMO. - One of the best-known official documents of Palamism (v.), composed on Athos about 1339–40. Gregorio Palamas wished to shield the doctrinal novelties of his Triads against any accusation by producing an authorized synthesis of them as something belonging to the whole of Athos, while himself remaining behind the scenes. And he succeeded. The drafting of the document, although inspired by Palamas, was carried out, according to the testimony of its author himself (Encomium of Palamas: PG 151, 393), by the disciple Filoteo Kokkino, later patriarch of Constantinople. No fewer than 21 persons affixed their signatures. Official approval by the Byzantine Church was granted to the document at the celebrated Synod of 1351 (PG 151, 757–58). Thereafter the t. a. became one of the milestones in the history of Palamism.
