ALBINAGGIO (Francis Aubaine, Middle English Escheat). - The right of a. or of albinato (perhaps from the Latin alibi natus, born elsewhere) is, in its proper sense, that right by which the feudal lord or the king or the State, depending on the era and the place, collected the inheritance of the non-naturalized foreigner who died in the territory subject to its jurisdiction. In a broader sense, the word a. also signifies the body of legal incapacities to which foreigners were once subject, especially in the field of testamentary successions.

The historical evolution of the a. varied in different countries; it survived at least in part until the 19th century in some countries. It is a source of pride for the Church to have been the first to rise up against this barbarous institution, banishing it from its territories (v. also STRANIERO, condizione giuridica dello).
