ALLYS, EUGÈNE-MARIE-JOSEPH. – Apostolic Vicar of Hué (Annam). Born on 12 February 1852 at Paimpoint (Rennes), he entered the Paris Society of Foreign Missions in 1875 and departed for northern Cochinchina at the end of that same year. His apostolate was marked by frequent persecutions (1883, 1885, 1898, 1899, 1900). Elected apostolic vicar in 1908, he worked with intelligent zeal for the prosperity of the mission, founding two indigenous congregations, promoting the establishment of a Cistercian monastery, and creating a secondary-education college. He received the highest French and Annamite distinctions. Having become blind, he left his office in 1931 and died at Hué on 22 April 1936.
