ANDLAU (ÄNDLAW), HEINRICH BERNARDUS. — Catholic political figure and publicist, b. in Friburgo in Br. on 20 Aug. 1802, d. there on 3 March 1871. Of an ancient and influential family, in his youth he came under the influence of the great bishop Giovanni M. Sailer. He was elected several times to the Upper Chamber of Baden, where, from 1837 onward, against the interference of the paternalistic State of Febronian tradition, he asserted the autonomy of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the free development of Catholic institutions, especially of the school. From a social standpoint he was conservative. He devoted intense activity to organizing Catholic associations throughout Germany, promoting the general assemblies of Catholics (Katholikentage), of which he was president several times. He actively collaborated with the Catholic press; in 1869, together with others, he founded the Katholische Volkspartei in Baden. Most significant writings: Über die Stiftungen im Grossbagt. Baden (1845); Offenes Sendschreiben an Hirscher (1850); Der Aufruhr und Umsturz in Baden (1850 ff.); Die bad. Wirren im Lichte der Landesverfassung (1865), in addition to the memoirs, entitled Gedanken meiner Musse (1859–1861), etc.
