ARDUINO, GIOVANNI. - Geologist, b. at Caprino Veronese in 1714 and d. at Venice in 1795.
When paleontology was not yet a science in its own right, A. asserted the full importance of fossils in determining the succession of the layers of the ground: to him are owed the classification and the naming of the layers into primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary, and the criteria that serve to distinguish them. This merit was recognized in him by the German von Zitell. He anticipated by 60 years the concept of facies as the set of petrographic and biological characteristics that serve to identify different geological formations belonging to the same epoch. He preceded Lyell in affirming actualism, that is, the principle by which past geological phenomena are studied by comparing them with the corresponding phenomena that occur at present under our observation. He was the first to establish geological cartography. He was a practicing Catholic, of simple habits, of a pleasant and affable character.
