BĒLA I (ALBERTO, ADALBERTO), king of Hungary. — He reigned from 1060 to 1063. He succeeded his brother Andrea I, against whom he had rebelled and whom he had defeated at Mosony. After the last pagan rebellion had been crushed in blood, he devoted himself to the country’s economic development. He founded a Benedictine abbey at Szekszard. Defeated in turn in 1063 by Enrico IV, who supported the rights of Salomone, son of Andrea I, he died shortly afterwards.
