BELA IV, King of Hungary. - He reigned from 1235 to 1270. Having ascended the throne, he had just finished re-establishing political and economic order and royal authority, greatly shaken during the reign of his father Andrew II, when in 1241 he had to face the Tatar invasion that forced him to take refuge in Dalmatia. The Tatar dominion lasted barely a year but left terrible traces in Hungary. With immense strength of mind and firm faith in divine help, B. began the work of reconstruction, for which he found valuable support in the Holy See and in the Hungarian Church. He supported the movement of the mendicant Orders; he also looked favorably upon and helped the formation of the Paulines. His daughters were the b. Cunegunda (Kinga), St. Margaret and the b. Yolanda.
