BERNARD OF CLUNY. - A Benedictine of the abbey of Cluny, who lived in the 11th century. As we know from the preface to his work, he was a disciple of St. Hugh (v.) of Cluny; by him he was initiated into theological and literary studies from the very moment of his entry into the monastery; B. is said to be indebted to him for his monastic formation.

Driven by the continual doubts of the monks of his time regarding monastic customs, around 1086 and 1088 he produced a new redaction of them, using and expanding that of Ulrich (v.), which was only a few years earlier. Such appear to be the results of the most recent studies set forth by d. Schmitz, whereas until now the compilation of B. was believed to be earlier. It is certain, however, that the collection of Ulrich bearing the title Antiquiores consuetudines Cluniacenses was the official text of the customs of Cluny. Besides this collection of monastic customs, known by the title Ordo Cluniacensis, other works are also attributed to B., but these are lost.
