BERNARDO di CLUNY. - A Benedictine monk of the abbey of Cluny, who lived in the 11th century. As we know from the preface to his work, he was a disciple of St. Ugo (v.) of Cluny; the latter initiated him into theological and literary studies from the time of his entry into the monastery; B. declares himself indebted to him for his monastic formation.
Prompted by the continual doubts of the monks of his time concerning monastic usages, around 1086 and 1088 he produced a new redaction of them, using and enlarging that of Ulrico (v.), which had preceded it by only a few years. Such seem to be the results of the latest studies presented by d. Schmitz, whereas until now B.'s compilation was believed to be earlier. It is certain, however, that Ulrico's collection, bearing the title Antiquiores consuetudines Cluniacenses, was the official text of the usages of Cluny. Besides this collection of monastic usages, known by the title Ordo Cluniacensis, other works are also attributed to B., but they have been lost.
