BERTOLOTTI, GIULIO. - Abbot General of the Cistercians, born at Chiusa in 1608 and died on 16 May 1682. Having entered at a very young age a monastery of the Congregation of the Feuillants of Italy, where he took the name Luca di s. Carlo, he distinguished himself by his love of study. He promoted intellectual work within the Order and directed the young toward the study of sacred and secular sciences. He held various offices in his province and was then, on two occasions, Abbot General of the entire Order.
His cultural and literary activity is attested by his many works, some of which were printed during his lifetime: Horrerica Lucae Bertoloti, Jus ducum Sabaudiae in regnum Cypri (Rome 1641); Columba Pamphilia (ibid. 1645); Diodus Gallica et Specus Bethlehemica (ibid. 1645-50); Alcydes mysticus, divus Bernardus (ibid. 1652); Vita cardinalis Joannis Bona (Asti 1677); Divi Bernardi, melliflu Ecclesiae doctoris, gesta illustriora elegiaca relata stylo (Rome 1682). Still in manuscript are Cardinalis Montalti currus; Antistes regularis; Centum moralis conscientiae casuum resolutiones; Cor Jesu amanti sacrum, piis et affectivis meditationibus eidem Jesu anagogicis motibus purgatum, illuminatum, unitum.
