BOULE, PIERRE-MARCELIN

BOULE, PIERRE-MARCELIN. - B. at Montsalvy (Coutal) in 1861, d. 19 July 1945 at Montsalvens. French paleontologist, pupil of Gaudry, director of the Institute of Human Paleontology in Paris. He is remembered for his description of the almost complete fossil skeleton of a representative of Neanderthal man in the classic work L’homme fossile de la Chapelle-aux-Saints (1912), in which the evolutionary premise is effectively reflected. He left numerous monographs, especially concerning Quaternary paleontology (cf. Les hommes fossiles, 3rd ed., Paris 1946).
