BOULE, PIERRE-MARCELIN

BOULE, PIERRE-MARCELIN. – Born at Montsalvy (Coutal) in 1861 and died on 19 July 1945 at Montsalvens. French paleontologist, a pupil of Gaudry and director of the Institute of Human Paleontology in Paris. He is remembered for the description of the almost complete fossil skeleton of a representative of Neanderthal man, in the classic work L'homme fossile de la Chapelle-aux-Saints (1912), in which the evolutionary presupposition is effectively apparent. He left numerous monographs, chiefly concerning Quaternary paleontology (cf. Les hommes fossiles, 3rd ed., Paris 1946).
