BEHRING, EMIL ADOLF. — Born at Hausdorf on 15 March 1854; died at Marburg on 31 March 1917. German physician, hygienist, and bacteriologist, professor at the University of Marburg, renowned for his discovery of the diphtheria antitoxin, which earned him the title of “saviour of children.” He concerned himself with general questions, leaving behind some notes and philosophical fragments published posthumously. He was not devoid of religious feeling and did not escape metaphysical torment.
Among his works are: Die Geschichte der Diphtherie (Leipzig 1893); Therapie der Infectionskrankheiten (Vienna 1899); Beiträge zur experimentellen Therapie (Vienna and Berlin 1900).
