Behring, Emil Adolf

BEHRING, EMIL ADOLF. - Born at Hausdorf on 15 March 1854 and died on 31 March 1917 at Marburg. German physician, hygienist and bacteriologist, professor at the University of Marburg, known for the discovery of the antidiphtheria serum, which earned him the name of "savior of children." He dealt with general questions, leaving some notes and philosophical fragments, published posthumously. He was not devoid of religious feeling and did not escape metaphysical torment.

Among his works are remembered: Die Geschichte der Diphterie (Leipzig 1893); Therapie der Infection krankheiten (Vienna 1899); Beiträge zur experimentellen Therapie (Vienna and Berlin 1900).
