BEIRA, DIOCESE of. — In Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa, with a port on the estuary of the Buzi River. It has approximately 25,000 inhabitants and is the principal maritime outlet for Southern Rhodesia. It was erected as a diocese on 4 September 1940, in accordance with the missionary agreement between the Holy See and Portugal (7 May 1940), and comprises the civil districts of B., Tete, and Quelimane (province of Zambesia). A suffragan of Lorenzo Marques, it has an area of 360,643 sq km and a Catholic population of 45,032, out of a total of 1,922,596.
