BRUMOY, PIERRE. - A learned Jesuit, historian, philologist, and French man of letters, born at Rouen on 26 Aug. 1688, died at Paris on 16 Apr. 1742.
Tutor to the Prince of Talmont and contributor to the *Mémoires de Trévoux*, he became known for the publication of *Pensées sur la décadence de la poésie latine* (1722). He himself wrote Latin verse, two of which are of some importance (*Passion* and *Verreria*). He authored volumes XI and XII of the *Histoire de l'Église gallicane* and the *Révolution d'Espagne*. His principal work is *Le théâtre des Grecs* (1730), with which he greatly contributed to the knowledge of Greek theatre, though he translated only seven dramas and analyzed and summarized others.
His works were published in 1741.
