Brumoy, Pierre

BRUMOY, PIERRE. - Learned French Jesuit, historian, philologist and man of letters, b. at Rouen on 26 Aug. 1688, d. at Paris on 16 Apr. 1742.

Tutor to the prince of Talmont and a contributor to the Mémoires de Trévoux, he attracted notice with the publication of the Pensées sur la décadence de la poésie latine (1722). He himself wrote poems in Latin, two of which are of some importance (Passion and Verrerie). He wrote vols. XI and XII of the Histoire de l'Église gallicane and the Révolution d'Espagne. His principal work is Le théâtre des Grecs (1730), with which he contributed greatly to knowledge of the Greek theater, but he translated barely seven dramas, while he analyzed and summarized others.

His works were published in 1741.
