BUET, CHARLES. - French journalist and man of letters, b. at Chambéry on 11 Oct. 1846 and d. at Paris on 23 Nov. 1897. A fervent and combative Catholic, he always wrote and fought for his religious convictions and for the defense of the Church.
He is a prolific author of novels of manners and historical novels, some of them inspired by the wars of religion, of short stories, and of historical works, not a few of which are a lively defense and apology of the Church (La Papesse Jeanne, La Dime, L'amiral de Coligny et les guerres de religion au XVIe siècle, etc.). To this intense output must be added the fine drama Le Prêtre (1881), of which a special edition was made for colleges and Catholic circles, political pamphlets of a monarchist bent, literary studies, and many articles in-
praising Catholicism, sometimes published under pseudonyms in the Echo de l'Ardèche, which he directed in a combative spirit.
