ADAM, JULIETTE. - French writer, b. at Verberie (Oise) on 4 Oct. 1836, d. near Callian (Var), on 24 Aug. 1936. She published several novels of no great value and of an anticlerical spirit; artistically, the best is Palenne, which, praised by the opponents of religion, is pervaded by a profound sense of impiety. She also wrote tales of country life and of travels, a biography of Garibaldi, descriptions of the siege of Paris and of political life after 1870. She also founded the Nouvelle Revue with a republican and literary program. Her anticlericalism later changed into pure religious faith (1905), which inspired her novel Chrétienne and the work Rome au Jubilé (1925), and made her a convinced and active Christian.
