DIAS, BARTHOLOMEU. - Navigator, b. around 1450. Entrusted by the king of Portugal with exploring the western coast of Africa and having set out in 1486 or '87, he arrived first at Cabo Tormentoso (later named Cape of Good Hope).

After the voyage of Vasco da Gama, the fleet led by Pedro Alvares Cabral, of which D. was a part, set about new explorations in March 1500: a very violent storm sank four ships, among which was that of D. (29 May 1500).
