Gautier de Coincy

GAUTIER de COINCY. - French Benedictine and poet, b. at Amiens in 1177, d. at Soissons in 1236.

He wrote religious lyrics, among the earliest in French literature, and a poem composed of about 80 legends, entitled Miracles de la Ste Vierge, pervaded by fresh ingenuousness. In it the Virgin is presented above all as the advocate of sinners. G. also reworked or translated numerous legends and lives of saints, among them the Vie de Ste Léocode, a social and ecclesiastical satire.
