GAUTIER de COINCY. – Benedictine and French poet, b. at Amiens in 1177, d. at Soissons in 1236.
He wrote religious lyrics, among the earliest in French literature, and a poem consisting of approximately 80 legends, entitled Miracles de la Ste Vierge, imbued with fresh ingenuousness. In it, the Virgin is presented above all as the advocate of sinners. G. also reworked or translated numerous legends and lives of saints, including the Vie de Ste Léocode, a social and ecclesiastical satire.
