Gautier, Léon

GAUTIER, LÉON. - French medievalist, b. at Le Havre on 8 Aug. 1832, d. at Paris on 25 Aug. 1897. Having entered the École des Chartes in 1852, he later occupied there the chair of paleography, which he held for thirty years. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions.

His principal activity was directed to the study of medieval literature, contributing to the diffusion in France of the ancient poems and especially of the Chanson de Roland, whose edition (1872) has become classic. Among his best scholarly works are remembered: Les épopées françaises (1863-68); La chevalerie (1884) and Histoire de la poésie liturgique au moyen-âge: les tropes (1886).
