James of Cessoles (De Cessolis)

GIACOMO di CESSOLLES (de Cessolis). – Dominican lector and writer of the 13th century. In the Liber de moribus hominum he treats of the customs and obligations of the various classes of human society according to the pieces of the game of chess. The work, disseminated in many manuscripts generally rich in miniatures, and in many translations, had numerous printed editions from 1473 to 1879. The Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (vol. VI, Leipzig 1936, cols. 402–10) lists the incunabula of the De ludo scachorum and the versions in High and Low German, English, French, Italian, and Dutch.
