JAMES OF CESSOLES (De Cessolis). - Dominican lector and writer of the 13th century. In the Liber de moribus hominum he treats of the customs and obligations of the various classes of human society according to the figures of the game of chess. The work, circulated in many manuscripts generally rich in miniatures, and in many translations, had numerous printed editions from 1473 until 1879. The Gesamthatalog der Wiegendrucke (vol. VI, Leipzig 1936, cols. 402-10) lists the incunabula of the De ludo scachorum and the versions in High and Low German, in English, French, Italian and Dutch.
