HERTZ, HEINRICH RUDOLPH. - German physicist, b. in Hamburg on 22 Feb. 1857, d. in Bonn on 1 Jan. 1894. He studied in Munich and was a pupil of H. von Helmholtz. In 1880 he obtained the title of doctor at the Physical Institute of Berlin, of which he immediately became an assistant. In 1883 he moved to Kiel, where he began the studies that led him to the experimental confirmation of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, definitively bringing to light those waves (v.) that bear his name, and that with G. Marconi opened the field of wireless telegraphy.
