HERTZ, HEINRICH RUDOLPH. - German physicist, born in Hamburg on 22 February 1857, died in Bonn on 1 January 1894. He studied in Munich and was a pupil of H. von Helmholtz. In 1880 he obtained his doctorate at the First Physical Institute in Berlin, where he immediately became an assistant. In 1883 he moved to Kiel, where he began the studies that led him to the experimental confirmation of Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory, definitively bringing to light those waves (v.) which bear his name and which, with G. Marconi, opened the field of wireless telegraphy.
