HILLE, PETER. - Poet, b. in Westphalia, near Höxter, on 11 Sept. 1854, d. 7 May 1904 in Berlin-Lichterfelde. One of the most conspicuous and original German poetic temperaments of the late nineteenth century, obscured or disfigured by the almost unreal life he led, somewhere between bohémien and gypsy. His refined sensibility dictated to him a lyric poetry that contains the lightest and most delicate verses of those years, and represents the liveliest part of his output.
In the novel Die Sozialisten (1887) there is a keen critical and skeptical analysis of socialism. A true novel is Die Hassenburg (1905), where he also discusses the problems of the nobility and of education. Of the two short historical novels Semiramis and Kleopatra (published together in 1896), the second is notable; even more so is Des Platonikers
Sohn, or "tragedy of education" (same year), where, however, it is above all the problems of social life, which was denied him, that are stirred up. There is also an aphoristic H., very popular, but weak. His friends saw to the collection of his posthumous works.
