JUBAL (Hebrew: Jābhāl; Greek 'Iousah). - Cainite, son of Lamech and of Adah, and "father of all those who handle the lyre and the flute" (Gen. 4:21). That is, the inventor of the kinnōr and the 'āghābh, rudimentary instruments, the first a stringed instrument, the second a kind of flute, such as shepherds make from a reed or other material.

In Gen. 4:21 ff. the rise of the arts that form material civilization is described. Babylonian tradition too, albeit in a different way, attributes the origin of culture to the antediluvian generations.
