LOUIS II, King of Hungary and Bohemia. - B. July 2, 1506, d. Aug. 29, 1526. He reigned from 1516, succeeding his father, Vladislaus II Jagiellon. The ten-year-old King was educated amid festivities and amusements and not in the affairs of State. Under the government of a royal council Hungary fell into anarchy, while the Turks, whom the Hungarians had already resisted for over a century, renewed their attacks against the country ever more. The inert King did not even later succeed in improving the situation. The disorganized and discordant country was thus an easy prey for the Turks. In the battle of Mohács (1526) not only did the King die, but the strong medieval power of Hungary also fell.
