Maasbode

MAASBODE. - Catholic daily newspaper ("The Meuse Messenger"), published in Rotterdam from 1 October 1868.

Initially a weekly, it became a daily in 1885, and from 1909 to 1942 it appeared with morning and evening editions. Suppressed by the Germans who occupied Holland in 1942 (already in the German bombing of Rotterdam, on 14 May 1939, its offices and presses had been devastated), it resumed publication in May 1945. Besides the M., the same company publishes local Catholic dailies and some weeklies. Since its founding the newspaper has dealt with political, social, moral, cultural and economic problems, especially by spreading the doctrine set forth in the encyclicals and other documents of the Roman pontiffs.
