MAASBODE. — Catholic daily newspaper (“The Messenger of the Meuse”), published in Rotterdam from 1 October 1868.
Initially a weekly, it became a daily in 1885, and from 1909 to 1942 it appeared in morning and evening editions. Suppressed by the Germans who occupied Holland in 1942 (its offices and presses had already been devastated in the German bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1939), it resumed publication in May 1945. In addition to the M., the same company publishes local Catholic dailies and several weeklies. Since its foundation, the newspaper has dealt with political, social, moral, cultural, and economic issues, especially by disseminating the doctrine presented in the encyclicals and other documents of the Roman pontiffs.
