SILVESTER IV, Antipope. - Maginulf, Roman archpriest. During the conflict over investitures with Henry IV, Paschal II had pronounced excommunication against him.
The Emperor's partisans seized the occasion of Paschal's absence from Rome to place him on the throne as pope (18 Nov. 1105), with the name Sylvester IV. He fell into the hands of Paschal and abdicated by order of Henry IV. At the time of the signing of the Concordat with Henry V, the antipope had to renew his abdication and promised obedience to Paschal II (Apr. 1111).
