MBULU, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - In the northern part of the territory of Tanganyika, entrusted to the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottine Fathers).
It was erected on 13 Apr. 1943; it comprises the civil districts of Mkalama (detached from the vicariate of Tabora), Singida (detached partly from the vicariate of Tabora and partly from the prefecture of Dodoma), and M. (detached partly from the vicariate of Tabora and partly from the vicariate of Kilimanjaro).
It has an area of 60,000 sq. km., with 450,000 inhabitants, of whom 10,060 are Catholics and 3,616 catechumens; 13 foreign priests, 6 native priests, 4 foreign lay brothers, 6 foreign sisters, 110 catechists, 27 teachers, 7 major seminarians, 8 minor seminarians, 8 principal and 25 secondary mission stations, 6 churches and 27 chapels, 5 dispensaries, 2 hospitals with 50
beds, 1 orphanage, and 7 elementary schools. Especially in recent times, the prefecture has experienced good development.
